A total of 123 Vietnamese nationals were caught attempting to enter China illegally on Saturday in Southwest China's Yunnan Province Andrew Heaney Jersey , the Longzhou Public Security Bureau announced on Tuesday.
According to police, six separate groups tried to sneak across the Chinese border on foot at 5 am on Saturday.
Among the illegal migrants, 45 were men and 78 were women.
They were immediately deported from China, because none of them had a Chinese visa.
Yang, an official at Shuikou Border Police Station, Longzhou county, told the Global Times on Wednesday that the migrants planned to find a job in Chinese sugar cane fields during the harvest season.
""They intended to stay with their relatives in Yunnan, and then find a job in nearby fields,"" said Yang.
Security improvements will be made at the Sino-Vietnamese frontier to enforce border control, the Longzhou police said.
Many of the would-be migrants have marital links to Chinese families, as many Vietnamese women married Chinese men in recent years.
Yang noted that the Vietnamese nationals planned to return to their home country after the harvest.
""This kind of case happens every year, especially during the sugar cane harvest season. Last year we caught about 100 Vietnamese trying to illegally cross the border,"" said Yang.
Yang said that labor shortages during the harvest seasons are a huge problem for local sugar cane farmers.
Vietnamese workers are willing to work for around half the prices of local Chinese laborers.
Yang said that he hopes the government could institute a more flexible immigration policy during the harvest seasons which meets the needs of both Vietnamese migrants and local farmers.
